Should you upgrade to Windows 11 for free in 2022?

When deciding whether to upgrade to Windows 11 for free, you need to consider the advantages and disadvantages of Windows 11.

However, the possibility of problems occurring is not zero, and some have actually been reported, so if you are concerned about them, you may want to wait and see.

On the other hand, if you want to use many of the new features quickly, or if you have a spare PC that you can use temporarily in case your printer becomes unavailable due to a problem, you may want to upgrade immediately.

This article also explains the free upgrade period for Windows 11.

Advantages and disadvantages of free Windows 11 upgrade

The advantages and disadvantages of upgrading to Windows 11 for free are as follows.

  • Advantage 1: Expect smoother operation
  • Advantage 2: Support period is extended
  • Advantage 3: Android apps can be used
  • Disadvantage 1: Required specs are higher than Windows 10
  • Disadvantage 2: Problems may occur
  • Disadvantage 3: There are changes to the menu and layout

You should consider these advantages and disadvantages before deciding whether to upgrade.
In particular, it is important to thoroughly check the details of possible defects.

Advantage 1: Expect smoother operation

By upgrading to Windows 11, you can expect your PC to run more smoothly.

Also, the layout has been changed so that it is compatible with both PC and tablet operations.

In addition, it has evolved to better support users with new features such as the ability to create multiple desktops, a chat function by default, and a passwordless feature.

Advantage 2: Support period is extended

Upgrading to Windows 11 extends the support period.

Support for Windows 10 ends in October 2025, so you can extend the support period by upgrading to Windows 11 by then.

Advantage 3: Android apps can be used

Around August 2022, you can now use Android apps on any PC that meets the requirements for Windows 11.

The latest version is available on Amazon Appstore.

Disadvantage 1: Required specs are higher than Windows 10

While upgrading to Windows 11 will make your PC run more comfortably, Windows 11 also requires higher specs from your PC.

For example, Windows 10 requires at least 1GB of memory (for 32bit), while Windows 11 requires 4GB. In addition, storage is required from 64GB.

Therefore, depending on your PC, it may be difficult to upgrade to Windows 11.

Disadvantage 2: Problems may occur

The following bugs have been confirmed in Windows 11:

  • Can't print with printer
  • Problem with Outlook
  • Problems with dual display

Upgrading to Windows 11 may cause the above problem.
However, it seems that this will be resolved in a future update, so if you are concerned, it would be a good idea to upgrade after these issues are resolved.

Disadvantage 3: There are changes to the menu and layout

In Windows 11, "Start (Windows mark)" is in the center of the taskbar, and "Copy" in the right-click menu is an icon.

For those who are used to operating Windows 10, this change may cause some confusion.

Windows 11 free upgrade period

Currently, the free upgrade period for Windows 11 has not been determined.
However, Microsoft officially states that it will not be earlier than October 5, 2022.

  • Windows 11 does not have 32bit and uses 64bit
  • You can revert to Windows 10 for up to 10 days
  • Internet connection may be required
  • It may not work if the app is not compatible.
  • Trouble may occur

Windows 11 does not have 32bit, only 64bit

There are 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 10, but only 64-bit version of Windows 11 exists.

Therefore, if your current PC has a 32-bit CPU, it does not meet the requirements for upgrading to Windows 11.

You can check the number of bits of the CPU by selecting the system from the settings and checking the "System type" in the detailed information.

You can revert to Windows 10 for up to 10 days

If you upgraded to Windows 11 but want to go back to Windows 10, you have 10 days to do so. On the other hand, it also means that you can go back to normal during that time.

Keep in mind that rollbacks to Windows 10 (reverting back to the Windows 10 version) can be performed free of charge for 10 days.

[How to rollback to Windows 10]

The Pro edition seems to be able to be upgraded without an internet connection.

It may not work if the app is not compatible.

If you want to continue using the apps you used on Windows 10, you need to check whether they are compatible with Windows 11.

This is because the app is not yet compatible with Windows 11 and may not work.

If an app isn't compatible with Windows 11, you'll need to wait for it to become compatible or find an alternative app that is compatible with Windows 11.

Trouble may occur

A bug has been reported in Windows 11.

I think there is a high possibility that these problems will be fixed in the future, but you may be in trouble if you are unable to use your printer while working.

If you only have one PC, I think it's a good idea to check for these problems and refrain from upgrading if there are any problems you'd like to avoid.

I tried "How to create and upgrade installation media" in "How to upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 11" using the 22H2 media, but "Keep personal files and apps" could not be selected and "Personal "Only the files will be inherited." If settings and apps are deleted, the upgrade installation becomes meaningless.
