Reasons and solutions when your Windows 10 or 11 computer is slow or slow

Reasons why Windows 10 and 11 are slow and slow

If you're using a Windows 10 computer and it's slow or slow, you'll be frustrated and stressed out because you can't get your work done.
If it was running smoothly when you bought it, but recently it has become heavier or slower, there could be various reasons.
We will investigate the cause, whether it is hardware deterioration or software congestion, and explain how to resolve it.

I will try my best to explain it so that even beginners can solve it, but if you find it difficult, please contact us via email or LINE and we will provide you with full support.

How to quickly fix Windows 10 and 11 to be slow

If you're using a Windows 10 computer and it suddenly becomes slow, and you think it never happened until yesterday, I'll explain two methods that are worth trying.
The two methods are as follows.

  • Restart your computer
  • Change power plan

I will explain each one.

Restart your computer

Before restarting your computer, be sure to save any application data you are working on.

If your computer is running slow or slow, especially if it freezes or hangs, restarting your computer will often improve the situation.
However, this method often provides a temporary improvement. If it freezes frequently, you need to find out the cause and fix it.

The steps to restart your computer are as follows.

Restart steps
  1. Click Start (Windows mark) on the bottom left to launch the Start menu.
  2. Click Power and then click Restart from the menu that appears.
  3. Your computer will restart.

Change power plan

Change the power plan and select High Performance to get your computer ready for use.
The steps to change the power plan are as follows.

  1. Launch the control panel
  2. Add a power plan (if you don't have one)
  3. Change power plan

1. Launch the control panel

Launch the control panel

-Click Start on the bottom left.
・Scroll to "W".
-Click "Windows System Tools".
-Click "Control Panel" in the list of "Windows System Tools".
The control panel is now open.

control panel 1

When Control Panel opens, click System and Security.

System and security

The window will change to "System and Security", so click "Power Options", the fourth item from the top.

power options

The window will change to “Power Options”.
① If "High Performance" is available under "Select or customize a power plan," you can select it and close the window, but this time, "High Performance" cannot be selected.
In this case you need to be able to choose.
②Click "Create a power plan" in the left pane.

Creating a power plan 1

The window will change to "Create a power plan".
Select "High Performance".

Creating a power plan 2

① Change the "Plan Name" if necessary. (Here, we simply set it to high performance.)
② Click the “Next” button.

power options

"High performance", which was not available until recently, can now be selected.
If you select "High Performance" and close the window, the power plan will become "High Performance".
I think this will make my computer run faster than before.

・Disadvantages of setting the power plan to high performance
If you set your power plan to "High Performance", your computer will consume electricity even when you are not using it much.
This means you will have to pay more for electricity.
If you don't feel much of a difference, please restore it and try another method.

Causes and solutions for Windows 10 and 11 computers that are slow and slow even after restarting the computer or changing the power plan

If restarting your computer or changing the power plan does not improve your computer's performance, check the following symptoms.
From here it gets a little more difficult, if you don't understand, please contact us via email, LINE, or comment and we will reply as quickly as possible.

  • If disk active time is 100%
  • If the CPU usage rate remains at or near 100%
  • When memory usage is 100%
  • When GPU usage is 100%
  • If infected with malware

To check the above status, launch Task Manager and check the status of your computer.

Start Windows 10, 11 Task Manager and check

The method to launch Task Manager is as follows.
This time I will explain how to check the performance of the task manager.
There are several ways to do this, but I'm writing the one I think is the easiest.

  • Right-click on the taskbar. (For Windows 11, right-click the start button.)
  • When the window opens, click on Task Manager.
  • When the Task Manager window opens, click "Details".
  • Click on the Performance tab at the top.
How to start task manager

-Right-click an open area of the taskbar and click "Task Manager" in the window that pops up.

task manager

・The Task Manager window will open, so click "Details".

Task manager details

・Click on "Performance" in the task manager details window.

task manager performance

・It is OK if it becomes the performance window of the task manager.
You can see the general status of your computer from this window.
Let's take a look.

If disk active time is 100%

task manager

It is common for disks to have 100% active time.
In particular, I think that almost all computers will reach 100% when Windows is started.
The problem is that it stays at 100% for a long time.

The image above shows the task manager immediately after starting up the computer, but the active time of the disk is 100% immediately after starting Windows. You can see that it goes down after about 30 seconds. (In the disk graph, the horizontal axis is time, and the graph represents the operation for 60 seconds.)

It's fine if the disk active time goes down in about 30 seconds, but if it stays at 100% for a long time, it will take a long time for Windows to fully boot up, applications will start slowly, and this will affect your work.

solution

The cause of this phenomenon is a hard disk failure.
We strongly recommend replacing the hard disk or replacing it with something like SSD.
Previously written article “How to resolve when your computer is slow due to disk usage of 100% in Windows 10”, but it is written in detail, so please refer to it.

When memory usage is 100%

task manager memory

When memory usage reaches 100%, your computer will become very slow.
What is the role of memory?

A common analogy is a person who is doing research.
A CPU is a person, memory is a desk, a hard disk is a bookshelf, and files (data) are books.
A person takes a book from the bookshelf and places it on the desk to examine it.
At this time, if the desk is small, you won't be able to put many books on it, and you will have to move the desk and bookshelf over and over again with the books.
However, if you have a spacious desk, you can store a lot of books at once, so you won't have to go to the bookshelf as often.
In other words, the more memory you have, the more data you can handle at once.

Then, when the memory usage rate of the computer reaches 100%, the computer assigns the memory role to the hard disk or SSD.
An SSD is fine, but if the hard disk is used instead of memory, the computer will run extremely slow and slow.

solution

The solution in this case is to add more memory or replace it with a larger capacity memory.

For laptops

When replacing or adding memory to your laptop, be sure to unplug the power cord and remove the battery.

How to choose memory

laptop memory

As for how to choose memory, basically use memory that has the same specifications as the memory you are currently using.

The red line in the image represents the memory standard.
4GB 1RX8 PC3L-14900
"4GB" This is the memory capacity, 4GB.
"1RX8" is a single rank module, 2RX8 is a dual rank module.
Represents the "PC3L" memory module. It uses DDR3 memory chips, and the "L" stands for low voltage.
"14900" is the operating frequency, it operates at 14,900MHz.

When adding memory, we recommend that you use the same manufacturer and standard if possible.
If this is not possible, please make sure that "1RX8" and "PC3L" are the same in the above case, otherwise it will cause trouble.

Until around 2014, it was DDR3 memory, but computers manufactured after 2014 are now DDR4 standard.

How to replace and expand memory

ノートパソコンの裏蓋
laptop back cover

Except for some laptops made for business use, there is a back cover on the back like the one shown in the image.
Open this cover by removing the screw with a precision screwdriver.

When you see the memory, open the image hook (the arrow part) to the left and right, and the edge of the memory will pop up.
If you hold the floating part and pull it, the memory will come out.

To install memory, first insert it into the memory slot and push it in until the hooks click into place.

For desktop computers

How to choose memory

desktop computer memory label

This image says "8GB DDR3 1600".
"8GB" is the memory capacity, there is 8GB.
"DDR3" is a memory chip standard. It's DDR3.
"1600" is the operating frequency, it operates at 1,600MHz.

When expanding the memory of your desktop computer, if you have only had one memory, it is best to use memory from the same manufacturer and with the same specifications if possible.
I'm currently using two, and if I want to add two, all I have to do is match the specifications.
It seems best to add or replace memory on a desktop computer in units of two.
However, I have seen computers with four memory slots, all made by different manufacturers and with different capacities, and running without any problems.

Like laptops, computers manufactured before 2014 use DDR3, but after 2014 they have changed to DDR4.

How to replace memory

desktop computer memory

In the case of a desktop computer, when you open the case, you will find the memory slot on the motherboard.
The memory can be removed by moving the hook in the direction of the arrow in the image and removing it.
The motherboard in the image has hooks on both memory slots, but recent motherboards often have hooks on only one side.

When GPU usage is 100%

task manager gpu

This is a case where the GPU usage rate reaches 100% and the computer becomes heavy, but most people do not experience such symptoms.
People whose GPU usage reaches 100% are people who edit videos, gamers, and people who use their monitors a lot when mining, trading stocks, FX, etc.

If you are editing a video, if the GPU usage reaches 100%, encoding (exporting the video) will take a lot of time.
For gamers, when the GPU usage reaches 100%, the frame rate drops and the game becomes choppy.
Even when the GPU usage rate reaches 100% during mining, stock trading, FX trading, etc., the screen will start to stutter.

solution

The only solution to these symptoms is to add or replace the graphics card.
Adding or replacing a graphics board to a laptop is almost impossible.

Adding or replacing a graphics card to a desktop computer is not difficult.

If CPU usage is at or near 100%

task manager cpu

When is the CPU usage rate at or near 100%?
This often occurs when the computer is started, but in this case it is resolved immediately (within a minute or two).
Additionally, the CPU usage may reach 100% when you are doing heavy work.
Video editing and high-performance games.

Also, if you buy a cheap computer with an Atom or Celeron CPU, the CPU usage rate may reach 100% just by watching videos on the internet.

It may be too late to write this here, but when purchasing a computer, look for specs that match the work and games you will be doing.
If you search on the internet, you'll probably find several computers recommended for video editing and computers recommended for gaming. Computers used by video editors and gamers are highly functional and expensive. You should be prepared for some expense.

solution

If the CPU usage is at or near 100%, the solution is of course to replace the CPU.

How to choose a CPU

・For Intel CPUs
It is almost possible to replace Intel CPUs as long as the socket matches.
If you are building your own computer, you can find out which CPUs can be used by the motherboard manufacturer.
The only way to find out is whether the manufacturer's computer is of the same generation.
Click here to check Intel CPU compatibilityCompatibility informationmay be helpful.
Also, if you check the motherboard's chipset, you can find out the generation and socket, so you can also find compatible CPUs.

・For AMD
AMD supports several generations of CPUs with one type of socket.
You can tell by the motherboard's BIOS (UEFI) version, but you can also find it on the motherboard manufacturer's website.
Please note that some motherboards such as Asrock may not be able to update the BIOS (UEFI) without an older CPU.

For laptops

In the case of laptops, replacing the CPU is probably not an option for those who are not used to repairing computers.
If it is soldered directly to the motherboard, it cannot be replaced.
Also, even if you are using a socket, it is not recommended to replace a low-spec CPU such as Atom or Celeron with a high-spec CPU such as Core i7. This is because recent high-spec CPUs generate a tremendous amount of heat, and cooling devices such as CPU coolers used in low-spec CPUs must be replaced.

For desktop computers

Replacing a desktop computer's CPU is relatively easy.
The steps are as follows.

・Unplug the power cord of the CPU cooler
・Remove the CPU cooler
・Wipe off the grease on the CPU cooler
・Remove the lever that secures the CPU and remove the CPU.
- Insert the new CPU into the socket and secure it with the lever
・Apply new CPU grease
・Install the CPU cooler and plug the power cord back into its original location.

If infected with malware

this,How to check for virus infectionPlease refer to.

If your computer suddenly becomes slow after downloading and installing something, you should suspect malware or adware.

How to remove adwareHow to remove viruses using AdwCleanerPlease refer to.

Many malware and adware are quite malicious, so you need to be careful as they may reappear unless you use a special tool to delete or change the registry.

Causes and solutions when Windows 10, 11 computer starts slowly and slowly

Even if you say your computer is slow or slow, the symptoms are especially noticeable when you start it up, and you may be able to use it more comfortably after a while.
In this case, I will explain what the cause is and how to resolve it.

Check if the hard disk is broken or damaged

If your hard disk is broken or has a problem, Windows 10 and 11 will start up slowly.
For more information, see this page.If disk active time is 100%Please refer to.

Disable startup apps

Launch Task Manager.
Right-click the taskbar in Windows 10, or the start button in Windows 11, and a menu will appear, then click "Task Manager."

task manager

When Task Manager starts up, select the Startup tab as shown in the image, select the app, and click "Disable" at the bottom right to prevent the app from starting when Windows starts.

Turn off apps running in the background

Show hidden indicators

This is common to Windows 10 and 11.
If you click on the "^" in the lower right corner, you will see the apps that are running (some are waiting) in the background as shown in the image. You can right-click the app icon and click "Stop" or "Exit" to terminate it immediately, or you can stop it next time by disabling the startup application you just wrote.

Stop OneDrive from running

task manager

OneDrive is automatically installed on Windows and starts automatically, so it is one of the factors that slows down Windows startup.
OneDrive will stop starting if you select the Startup tab from Task Manager and disable Microsoft OneDrive as shown in the image above. You can also uninstall it from the Settings app.

Disable animation

You can make Windows start up faster by disabling Windows animations.

For Windows 10

Launch the settings from the start button on the bottom left.

setting

Click on "Easy access" located slightly below the settings.

Easy operation, display

Turn off "Show animations in Windows" for the display.

For Windows 11

Launch the settings from the start button.

settings, accessibility

Click Accessibility in the left pane, then click the second visual effect from the top in the Accessibility window.

Accessibility > Visual Effects

Once you are in the visual effects window, turn off the animation effects.

This will turn off the animation, but I don't think there will be any noticeable difference on a high-spec computer.

Disable unnecessary services with administrative tools

This is common to Windows 10 and 11.

Right-click the Start button and select "Computer Management" from the menu that appears.

Computer Management > Services

Click Services in the left pane.
Make sure that the startup type of the service you want to stop is set to "Automatic" and double-click it.

Service properties

The service properties window will open, so change the startup type from automatic to disabled and close it with the OK button.

This will prevent the service from starting at startup, so your computer will start up faster.
I don't think this will have much effect on a high-spec computer.

Frequently asked questions when Windows 10 and 11 computers are slow

Q: When I bought it, it was running smoothly, but before I knew it, my computer became slow.
A: If you experience these symptoms, there is a 90% chance that the hard disk has failed or is about to fail. If you replace the hard disk with a new hard disk or replace it with an SSD, your computer will be running smoothly again.

Q: Is my computer slow because it is infected with a virus?
A: Although the possibility is not zero, Windows 10 and 11 computers are automatically monitored for viruses by an excellent virus app called Windows Security for free. This is as good as paid virus apps, so there are very few cases of virus infection these days.

Causes and solutions when your Windows 10 or 11 computer suddenly becomes slow or slow

Many of the reasons why a Windows 10 or 11 computer suddenly becomes slow seem to be caused by recently installed apps.
Viral infection is also not inconceivable.
However, I don't know how suddenly "suddenly" means, so please see the link below for a solution.

[Easy solution] How to check the cause when your PC suddenly becomes heavy and make it more comfortable

Why is my new computer so heavy and slow?

Sometimes there are people who say that their computer is heavy and slow even though they just bought it.

The reason for this is that you are not purchasing a computer according to its purpose.
Some games and apps have recommended specifications, so be sure to check the minimum specifications.

Also, the minimum specs may be just ``just work'', so if you want it to run smoothly, I think it's a good idea to read reviews before deciding on a computer to buy.

If you buy a computer because it's cheap or because it's been reduced in price, you may regret it, so please make your decision carefully.

Summary: Improve Windows 10 is slow and heavy

When I repair computers, most of the time when the computer is slow or slow, I can fix it by replacing the hard disk.
It is unavoidable that hard disks deteriorate over time, and recently, SSDs have become cheaper, so replacing them with SSDs is an option. If you replace it with an SSD, your Windows 10 or 11 computer will no longer take 30 seconds to boot.
Please examine it by all means.
